Merrick Recalls 86 Cases Of 10z Beef Filet Squares For Dogs

Merrick Recalls 86 Cases Of 10z Beef Filet Squares For DogsJuly 6, 2010

Merrick Pet Care has announced that is recalling 86 cases of its 10oz “Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” pet treats because the treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The potentially contaminated treats, which were sent to retailers and distributors throughout the United States, are sold in 10oz plastic bags marked with “Lot # 10084TL7 Best By Mar 24, 2012” on the top of the bag and on a sticker at the bottom of the bag.Symptoms of Salmonella infections in dogs include lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms, immediate veterinary attention is necessary.

It should also be noted that dogs may be carriers of Salmonella meaning they can exhibit no symptoms but be able to pass the infection to other dogs.??Salmonella can also impact humans. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella can also cause more severe problems including arthritis and heart lining inflammation. If you suspect you have been exposed to Salmonella you should contact your medical provider immediately.

To help protect against the spread of Salmonella, all surfaces that have come into contact with any Salmonella-contaminated products should be thoroughly cleaned, and dog owners should wash their hands in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds after coming into contact with these products.Although no illnesses have been reported to date from the recalled treats, the recall was instituted because Food and Drug Administration FDA had collected a surveillance sample of “Merrick Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” from a retail store which tested positive for Salmonella.

This latest recall involving Merrick comes on the heels of an FDA warning in January 2010 regarding Merrick Beef Filet Square dog treats with a package date “Best By 111911” because those treats may have been contaminated with Salmonella. The January FDA warning was issued after a routine testing of the product, conducted in December 2009, resulted in a positive finding for Salmonella. A follow-inspection then found deficiencies in the manufacturing and packaging process. If you have purchased a recalled product you should, taking the proper precautions to avoid contact with the treats, return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Merrick at 1-800-664-7387, Mondays through Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm CDT.
