Re: Dog Policy Postby xxxxxx on Sun Oct 12, 2008 12:15 pm

Ahhhh, a dog run with twice daily poop pick-up… Great idea. Why not pile on more work for the maintenance staff, which is already reduced to a level well below what’s needed to take care of this complex. I have a novel idea — How about the dog-owners pick-up their own poop.

Hold on, are you saying they don’t? That every dog owner is irresponsible? Why isn’t having the dogs poop and bin in a designated are not a good idea?

And while posting signs that the dog runs are for residents only is a swell idea, I doubt it will keep non-resident dog owners out.

Why not have key-card entry to the run like we have in the buildings? That would solve that. Also it might help persuade more owners to register for the [privilege?]  This is a petition. It’s not an operating plan.

Just look at how many non-residents dog owners ignore the signs posted at each entrance into the complex stating it’s a private residence and parade their dogs through the complex to do their business and leave.

Like there are no non-res children using the playgrounds?

Even Howard Sloane the host of PCVST has acknowledged this is a problem.

I understand why dog-owners want one, but for just a moment think about how a dog run will effect the PEOPLE in the buidlings that live next to it or by it. All you need to do is walk past the dog runs located in Stuyvesant Park and Tomkins Square Park to observe the noise level. And these dog runs are located in an area in which there is some distance between that and residential buildings, thereby disbursing some of the noise. The noise level in Stuy Town and PCV is at an all time high, why add to it.

How is that different from the continuous noise from playgrounds PCV2 and ST12 with the sound of screaming toddlers echoing off the brick?  Toddlers need plenty of exercise and free outdoor voice to properly develop and socialize. As long as we have dogs wouldn’t you rather have them tired out from the dog playground instead of running around barking in their apartments? Seems to me to be similar to kids, no?

As it is, given the placement of the buildings in this complex, I’m woken up every morning by barking dogs. Why dog-owners would certainly benefit from the dog-run is it best or work for the entire community. I think not. Lastly, why are only market raters being charged a fee, while I note that many of the dog owners are the long-term tenants (rent stabilized)? Is it prohibited under rent stablization laws?

That’s a good question. No one in the office will answer it. Everyone should keep in mind that it’s been only 8 months since the ban was lifted. More dogs are moving in every day.
